The essence of man’s mind is Great and Substantial! Great because it embraces all things, and Substantial because all things are within nature.
When the reality of man’s mind is free from the bondage of attachments both emotionally and materially, and is not lacking its originally unlimited and pure wisdom, it is known to be in its state of Tranquility. Though in this state of tranquility it yet possesses a natural ability to be able to cope with any externally changing circumstance with no blemish to its Essence which is known as Motion. Do not have the wrong impression that “Tranquility” and “Motion” are two separate entities. Though they may be different linguistically, in substance they are one and the same. Tranquility is the quintessence of Motion, while Motion is the activity of Tranquility. Benevolence, righteousness, propriety, wisdom and trustworthiness are the five Universal Obligations which constitute the predisposition ingrained within human nature. Therefore man is ingenious and capable of directing his thoughts, words, and actions (Motion) to simultaneously utilise Motion with his innate nature (Tranquility). When these actions coincide then it is a case of witnessing Tranquility and Motion simultaneously. There is a lesson in considering the action of water, whenever there is a downward slope, be it steep or gentle, without doubt water will flow down it. Just the same, as long as there is a need for righteousness, a benevolent man never fails to oblige. EXAMPLE: If a man should suddenly witness a child stumble and fall into a river, he will at once feel alarmed and without giving a second thought to his own safety plunge promptly into the river to rescue the child. Mencius: Lelow Part 1 | “Benevolence is the tranquil habitation of man and the righteousness is his straight path.” | Mencius: Kaou Tsze Part 1 Chap 11:2 | “The tendency of man’s nature to do good is like the tendency of water to flow downwards.” | |
